What is Zoom and what are its features
Zoom is a video chat, it has social media functionality, it allows the user to have conferences, and if you’re a team no matter how many people are in your team Zoom will allow you to hold joint meetings.
These features allow you to use Zoom in lots of ways – if you’re a freelancer or an agency, or some other business where understanding your customers through conversation is vital, then these are the kinds of things that are going to be helpful for you.
So what does it do? Well let’s look at some of its basic concepts:
it allows for video conferences as many people as you want, as long as there is enough bandwidth. It works on desktop, mobile and tablets. It’s available on multiple operating systems.
The price is $9.99 a month or $99 a year, it’s meant to be used by teams. It’s not a one-to-one video call.
The benefits of using Zoom for video conferencing
Zoom is the top video-conferencing company in the world. There’s no denying that, with over one million users and their support of Apple Watch and iOS 9 Apple products. If you’re looking for the best video conferencing company Zoom is it. They’re backed by some important people as well, for example Sales Force CEO Marc Benioff invested $100 million into Zoom back in 2014. And why would Benioff do that if Zoom was a run of the mill company? [To read more about the Sales Force investment, see “Zoom investors include Marc Benioff (Sales Force CEO) and Peter Thiel.”]
How to use Zoom for your business
There are two ways to use zoom for your business, one of them would be to pay for it and shell out the cash, but if you want a little more functionality without a charge then you can use the free account. This will allow you to have up to 25 attendees per meeting, as well as video conferencing you can share screens as well. The free account also allows you to conference using mobile devices, tablets, and computers.
Using Zoom for your business can be incredibly valuable. You can go through the options and find the one that is going to fit your business needs. You can use it to simply talk to clients in different time zones or you can use it for really collaborative meetings where everyone is going over the same information and working together remotely, which is becoming more and more common with remote employees everywhere.
The cost of using Zoom
Paying for the service will cost you around $15 per month, but you can get started with the free account. Paying for that account does give you a few perks though such as:
– A dedicated URL for your Zoom account
– 24/7 customer service
– Use the app on up to five devices simultaneously
The cost of using Zoom? It’s free! Sure, there are some limitations such as the fact that you can only have one conference at a time and you cannot change users in the middle of your meeting. Still, all that could be fixed in an update with just a little bit more development.
It looks like I was right. Zoom is using their own in-house technology and not an off-the-shelf solution. The fact that they need the bootstrap code means that they are sure of the ability to update this without too much difficulty, unlike a third party vendor.
You could argue that there is little difference between the free service and Pro. That’s OK, I can live with that. Then they wouldn’t have to go through all the development work required to make a Pro account worth it.
Alternatives to Zoom
If zoom isn’t your cup of tea you can consider using Zoom competitor GoToMeeting. They offer a free account as well, but you’ll have to pay $15 a month if you want to use the full multifunctional capabilities of the service. But if you don’t have that kind of money and need to keep it simple then you can use Microsoft Skype for on-premise video conferencing for free. There are a lot of other options though, such as FaceTime, Cisco Webex, and many more.
