Barber shops have been making a comeback in recent years, and for good reason – they offer a unique grooming experience that you can’t find at home.
In recent years, barbershops have been popping up left and right. They offer a unique grooming experience that you can’t find at home. Services include shaves, haircuts, straight-razors and hot towel treatments among others. The difference between a barber and a hair stylist lies mainly in the training and skill set. Hair stylists usually have a higher standard of education, focusing on all sorts of hair, from straight to black. Barbers focus on cutting men’s hair, with shorter training time than that of a barber.
A barber shop is one of the oldest and traditional shops around. They offer a lot of training and experience on how to cut hair. Some don’t even have mirrors, letting customers watch their work in action. They usually have to be very skilled at their craft to be able to cut hair without hurting people.
“Some of the most senior barbers aren’t even in the industry anymore,” says Zachary Berke, owner of The Do-Bars Barber Shop in San Jose, California (see video). “There’s a sacredness to it. It takes some time to learn.”

Barbering is an art form. Learning the basics from someone who’s been doing it for years goes a long way. “The cutter is more important than the shop,” says Berke. “There are very few shops where you won’t get your haircut. The barber is the most important part of the business. The barber is responsible to the client for delivering a service.”

If you’re looking for a barber shop that will make you look your best, check out one of these five establishments.
If you’re looking to get a fade or a beard trim, we highly recommend The Art of Shaving, Men’s Emporium and Mimi Kandilash. If you’re looking for something more luxurious, try The Old Line Barber Shop and Co. in St. Louis, Mo., or The Barbering Room in New York City.
The Art of Shaving
The Art of Shaving’s signature service — a hot towel, straight razor shave — is an experience in itself. For $45, you’ll be pampered as your skin is lathered with warm mitts, a hot towel wrapped around your face and the razor glides over your face. You’ll also receive a hand massage and a facial for that luxury feeling.
The Men’s Emporium

Each of these barber shops has its own unique style and atmosphere, so be sure to do some research before choosing the one that’s right for you.

Once you’ve found the right barber shop, be sure to schedule an appointment and enjoy the experience!
If you’ve found a barber shop that you’re interested in, make sure to set up an appointment. You’ll have to provide your hair length and style, as well as whether you prefer a classic or modern haircut. Most barbershops offer both. If you want to get a shave, you’ll probably have to book a separate appointment. Some barbers will offer beard trims, but most recommend visiting a hair stylist for that.
You can call many barbershops to learn more about their services and current offers. For instance, you can ask if they have any special promotions or give them a call to schedule an appointment. Barbers usually need long hair only. However, some barbershops may accept shorter hair as well. Some places will provide only men with haircuts, while others will include women and teenagers as well.
It’s also good to be mindful of your budget and how much you’re willing to spend. Many barbershops offer services at a fixed price and some also charge on the number of haircuts you’ve received. You should also inquire about same-day appointments, night haircuts and walk-in services. When you’ve found a barber shop that’s in line with your preferences, start scheduling an appointment.
To make your visit more pleasant, be sure to bring along the following items:
· A photo of yourself that depicts your hairstyle.
· A pen and paper to take down the shop’s name, address and phone number.
· Your favorite tunes or relaxing music. Some barbershops offer services by listening to the customers’ favorite songs.
· Your comb or scissors if you want to obtain a haircut. It’s good to know that most barbers will not provide you with any implements if you bring your own.
