Introduction: Why You May Want to Turn On Your Flashlight in the Rust Console
If you have recently played the Rust game, you may have been stuck in a dark cabin waiting for your teammate to arrive. Rust is a multiplayer survival game where players must gather resources to build shelters and gear, explore the map for new objects, and fight other players for survival. One of the most useful features of Rust is being able to see your surroundings at night using your flashlight. It is possible to use the flashlight in the rust console, but you only have a limited amount of battery life. If you are running out of battery, you will no longer be able to see things around you. The good news is that it is actually possible to turn on your flashlight in the Rust console. In this article, I will explain how to do this, and I will cover some more advanced things like using a second power source with your flashlight. This tutorial assumes that you are using Linux or UNIX. Your specific distribution may vary from what I describe, but you should be able to apply the techniques that I mention to your favorite distribution.
Installing the Game
First, let’s go ahead and install the game. The developer does not make a binary package available for download anywhere, so we must build the program from source. Open up a terminal window and run these commands:
cd ~ wget http://static.rust-servers.net/dist/rust-0.4.tar.gz tar xvzf rust-0.4.tar.gz cd rust-0.4 ./configure && make
If the terminal window exits without any error messages, you should be ready to play the game! Go ahead and run this command:
./playercargo run –release —

The World of Rust’s Unknown Darkness
Now that you know how to use the console, there are a few things you can do to improve your experience. For example, there is a way to recharge your lantern in the console. First, make sure that the lantern is completely empty. When you can’t extinguish it anymore, the lantern will become dim and start to burn your hand.
As you can see in the image above, there are two options in the list: ‘Empty’ and ‘Empty All’. If you don’t have any batteries packed, you should use ‘Empty All’. But if you do have some extra batteries in your backpack, click on ‘Empty’, then click on the filled lantern and it will be ready for use again.
Next, let’s say you’re in a dark cave, there are only a few torches scattered around the place and it’s pretty dark. The lantern doesn’t seem to illuminate anything and darkness still surrounds your character. What do you do? As long as you have some batteries, then use the console again:
>batteries
