Introduction: What is WinRAR?
Winrar is a file archiving software that can create archives and compress files. It was created by Eugene Roshal back in 1993. The program is also used to extract archives and has other features like directory creation, folder comparison, formatting disks and folders, extraction of password-protected files or volumes. The latest version of the application is Winrar 5.40 that includes many new features like the option to create and extract .zipx files. It has a better performance in both, creation and extraction of archives.
WinRAR is also used to encrypt files. The latest version even offers the possibility to create encrypted volumes and compress them with its file archiver. The software is available in many languages. WinRAR is created by Eugene Roshal who came up with the idea for the software after using a program developed by Phil Katz. Phil used to take the code and developing it. He then sold the program and kept all the rights to it.
How to Choose an Alternative Compression/Decompression Software for Windows 10
PowerArchiver is a good piece of software that can be used to extract file formats and compress files. It can be downloaded from http://powerarchive.sourceforge.net/ . Once you have PowerArchiver on your computer, it lets you decide what file formats you want to work with and extract. Right-click on the file or folder, select “Extract here” from the menu, and then which format from the list that appears. The compression format is set by default but can be changed if desired. You can also choose which type of compression to apply for each file: pure, fast or high-speed. It is up to the user to decide which format fits the file best.
The program creates a folder for each file type you choose, so if you extract a lot of files, it can take up a lot of disk space. The high compression ratio can take up more time than you want to spend, too.
