Note: This tutorial is for phones that were purchased activated and updated through Straight Talk. This process will not work for phones from other carriers. It is recommended you backup your data before starting this process. Updates to this tutorial will be posted as new information becomes available.
To get started, you will need to have your phone, the USB cable for your computer, and a few basic apps on you.
What are the Best Practices for Updating an Android Phone?
It is highly recommended you do a full backup and data wipe before any android update to ensure your programs, logs, and other important data is backed up. If you use a custom recovery, it is necessary to make a factory reset before flashing the new firmware.
First and foremost, it is recommended you update your phone using the OTA updater. The Over-The-Air (OTA) updater can be accessed by opening the settings app on your device and going to “about phone,” selecting “system updates,” and then tapping on the gear icon in that page.
In order to access this option, you must make sure your device is set to receive notifications for system updates by going into the settings app again and checking that box beside “System Updates.
If you are unable to access “System Updates” through the settings app, you can install the Google Updater app from the play store (requires root access). This can be done by going into the Google Play Store and searching for “Google Updater.”
