The best time to watch auroras is as soon as you can see the sun starting to set just after midnight, for about 3 hours each night until about dawn each morning. The best viewing window is from 12:30-3:00 am. If you’re driving, plan about 4 hours round trip to Fairbanks and back. Expect to drive a distance of roughly 300 miles. Mileage is higher on the drive from Fairbanks to the hilltop on the eastern edge of town, but the road is smooth and in good condition most of the way there. Also expect a lot of evening driving on the way back from Fairbanks. At this time this road is not plowed or salt laden, so keep your headlights on winter driving conditions during late evening are likely.
The Fairbanks Hilltop is located on top of a hill. The hill is about 30 feet higher than the surrounding area and gently slopes for another 30 feet or so. It’s possible to get up to the top of the hill by walking through some brush, but you’ll want to leave that for later in your evening if you haven’t done it already. This also gives you more time to view the aurora from below, as well as get a closer view from up on top of the hill.
