sai failed to save my canvas and I lost all my work
This happened to me just a few hours ago. I had been trying to save my last version of my canvas at the time. I had already saved a backup copy, so it wasn’t like anything catastrophic was going on, but when I came back the next day and opened up SAI again, nothing happened. No save dialogue box came up, nothing. I stared at the black screen for a good five minutes before I realized that it wasn’t going to recover nothing, and I would need to do it manually. I opened up a notepad window and started going through my save path one file at a time.
I found this folder and the file extension was .svcut, but I’m pretty sure that wasn’t what was causing my problem, so I watched the video below to find out what I was doing wrong:
The reason why this happened is because of an error that plagues SAI. When saving, a strange thing happens to the incognito canvas. This can be seen in the image above. The only thing that was needed was to change the extension of the file from svcut to svcut.png.
Unfortunately, this caused some bugs that got patched a few years back, but the fix had come up with some script-kiddies early on in SAI’s lifecycle and so those problematic files were left behind. Updating SAI today would not have prevented this issue, but it still would have been helpful to read about this issue before I attempted to save again. There is a chance that the bug has reappeared. I will be keeping an eye on it.
For those of you that are curious as to what exactly happened, I have included the conversation below:
The SAI Team: “svcut.png” is not a valid file extension for this software version.”
I was really close to finishing the piece and now I have to start over
The piece I was working on was a commissioned project, so it was really close to being done. It had a big deadline looming and I really wanted to get it done. Now I have to start all over because my canvas is gone and I have no way of getting it and no way of previewing the end product. I feel like such an idiot right now.
I’ve been working on that piece for a while now. I’m almost done, but I lost the canvas piece I was working on. No matter how hard I tried to get it back, but it simply wasn’t there. It ripped right through my house and left me with nothing to show for my work. Sadly this is my first time getting a commissioned piece so I have no idea how this happened.
This is the third time this has happened and it’s really frustrating
I had this same thing happen to me before with the same client, and the client was getting really frustrated with the delay. I’m pretty sure I’m going to lose them as a client now because of this. They already didn’t like that it was taking so long, and if I inevitably have to charge them for another piece, they’re going to be even more angry. This isn’t a good way to get new clients.
Does anyone know of a workaround or a way to prevent sai from crashing when saving canvases?
I don’t think anything is preventing it from crashing, but I really want to prevent it from happening again. I tried using a different color palette in SAI and that didn’t crash either, but I don’t know if that’s going to be a permanent solution. I also tried saving in a different file format, but that didn’t work either. If I create the file in the default format, then save it as a different format (essentially creating a different file), SAI can still load the original file.
I’m not sure what’s causing this bug to happen, but I wanted to make sure and share my thoughts while I figure it out.
Maybe I’ll have a new post up later today with something concrete on this bug. I’ll update here in case anyone has any ideas or is able to replicate what is happening.
Thanks for all the responses so far,
