What is Oracle ERP Cloud and how does it compare to Infor Lawson?
Oracle ERP Cloud is a SaaS (Software as a Service) cloud implementation of Oracle’s successful enterprise resource planning program. It includes the elements of Enterprise Resource Planning, with key features including real-time controls, reporting and analytics, business intelligence and data mining capabilities. It’s built on Oracle’s infrastructure on demand (IoD) cloud offering, which was the result of a deal the company made with Google in 2012. If a customer pays for one year in advance and has at least 1,000 Oracle or other certified users accessing their ERP Cloud applications every month, then Oracle will host the account for them on their IoD hosting infrastructure. It’s like getting a huge discount on the price of running the ERP Cloud software and making Oracle an extremely happy company.
Infor Lawson is also a SaaS-based ERP Cloud solution, but it has a very different focus than Oracle ERP Cloud. Infor Lawson is more of an all-in-one business management software package. It features a single application, designed to be used by all employees at a company, with functions that can be customized for each business unit or department. It’s great for small businesses, mid-sized companies and larger enterprises.

The ERP system, which is available in applications for the Windows, Java and Solaris operating systems, is used by strategic partners, independent software vendors and service providers in more than 180 countries.
Oracle’s 2014 user survey found that Oracle’s cloud-based online business management systems were used by 71 percent of customers around the world. That figure was up from about 70 percent in 2013. “The number of Oracle users using online business management grew by almost 50%,” said Joe Lawrence, Oracle’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “We expect this trend to continue, as we deliver a seamless, easy-to-use and low-cost cloud ERP experience to businesses of all sizes worldwide.”

So what’s the difference between the two systems?
Oracle ERP Cloud is designed to address the needs of companies that have very large numbers of users accessing their applications each month, while Infor Lawson is designed for businesses with less than 1,000 users. Oracle’s IoD service offers security and scalability features that are not available in Infor Lawson, or any other cloud-based ERP system. For example, Oracle provides financial business continuity and disaster recovery that are not available in Infor Lawson. It is also easier for companies with large numbers of users to leverage Oracle’s code base and support. As another example, with Oracle ERP Cloud you don’t have to manage your own hardware and software (perhaps through a cloud-based IaaS solution), which means that you can purchase the Oracle ERP Cloud from a third party, instead of building it yourself. In addition, Oracle ERP Cloud is available in several global locations, whereas Infor Lawson has more limited global support.
Overall, an Oracle ERP Cloud deployment is a better fit for companies that have larger numbers of users, who require security and scalability features that aren’t available in Infor Lawson. Oracle ERP Cloud is not a viable alternative to Infor Lawson for businesses with less than 1,000 users.
