What is l&a management and what are its benefits
L&A management is the management of people and organisations to further the accomplishment of a desired outcome. It is a process that involves the systematic identification of processes and systems, and their modification to influence desired change.
The benefits that can be derived from l&a management are very similar to those obtained from other management styles. L&A management is based on the following assumptions:
1. Learning, in all its forms, occurs continuously throughout the human life cycle. It occurs both as a result of conscious effort and as a by-product of daily activities
2. Learning is enhanced when the appropriate opportunities exist and barriers to learning are removed
3. People build and use knowledge when they understand connections between what they know, what they can do, and what others need to know and do in order to accomplish their aims
4. People want to learn, want to use their skills, and want to make a difference
5. People have many different and important skills that they have developed, learned or developed within the organizations that they work
6. People know what it is like to be successful where they work, colleagues around them who are also successful and the organization that they work for
7. People share a strong belief in the various systems that enable their organisations to perform efficiently and effectively
8. People seek and use feedback to improve their performance
How to get started with l&a management
L&A management is a systems approach to human resources management. It cannot be implemented on its own, but is only part of the integrated HRM framework. It should not be confused with a standalone discipline focusing on the creation of systems. Rather it is the application of systems thinking to an organisation in line with its business objectives. Benefits of L&A management include:
An L&A Management system is more than just the traditional six-sigma (“DMAIC”) approach. It focuses on corporate objectives, business strategies and market dynamics to develop a methodology that specifically addresses the needs of the company. These could be operational product quality, employee skills or improving communication between departments.
The main players in L&A management are the three ‘C’s: Culture, Competencies and Capabilities.
Culture is the way in which an organisation thinks, acts and organises itself. A company’s culture influences whether effective alliances are created between departments or individuals. It outlines the relationship between ‘them’ and ‘us’. The culture drives behaviours of employees.
The different types of l&a management software available
There are many software programs available in the market today. The main differences between them centre on their functionality and ease of use. 3.1. Functions of a L&A Management System The baseline function of a L&A management system is to serve as a data repository. Its main functions can be classified into the following: 3.1.1. Organise L&A information and processes to support the business objectives of an organisation. 3.1.2. Appraise, monitor and report on the effectiveness of an organisation’s human resource management processes, systems and people – in other words establish targets for improvement or performance improvement goal setting . 3.1.3. Manage L&A systems, people and processes to ensure that they deliver the expected outcomes. 3.1.4. Manage the process of developing and utilising the right people, according to their skills, experience, knowledge and qualifications as required to achieve the organisation’s business objectives. 3.1.5. The selecting and employer-inclusion of suitable candidates who fit the organisations’ requirements profile in terms of skills, experience, knowledge and qualifications required to fill jobs or roles within an organisation – for example for recruitment , promotion or training .
3.2. Functions of a L&A Software System Software systems differ from one another in the scope of information and processes that they record, in what parts of an organisaiton’s activities they are effective and by how much time they save employees.
Tasks are the actions or tasks that employees must perform to keep an organisation running. It is a fundamental principle in l&a management that these tasks must be defined. This will facilitate the optimisation of L&A working processes. At the same time, L&A software systems should provide an appropriate environment for implementing these tasks.
