Introduce readers to night mode for reddit
Night Mode for Reddit is a browser extension that takes the existing site and darkens the background, provides a lighter colored text for easier reading. Since it darkens the background, we were concerned about this affecting users with photosensitive epilepsy. This was not entirely addressed in the original post, except to state they would be working on some sort of fix.
Questions: What is the fix they will be working on? I’d be happy to help code it, although I’m not a front end dev so it will probably have to be more of an integration than a fix.
Can we file a bug? If so, what should we include in the bug report? What should be called the bug? (the original question mentions a feature as that’s what I would expect to see)
Does this come with an option for more fine grained control over the UI for people that want more options than just “on”? The intention to give this feature is laudable, but I personally don’t want it on permanently.
Does it affect Reddit in any other way, e.g. pictures of the solar eclipse? If not, will it?
Lastly: what is the fix for photosensitive epilepsy? Hopefully some sort of option where the only thing affected by night mode are the text, as opposed to everything. It doesn’t need to be a good solution, something quick and dirty would be enough to put users’ minds at ease
Explain how to enable night mode
Once you have the extension installed, you can toggle it on and off in your browser’s general settings. If your computer has temporarily lost power, you may find that it has been disabled. No need to worry though – just click the refresh button in your browser (usually located at the top) and then select Night Mode from the list of options. It’s also possible to quickly enable night mode by clicking the little lightning icon in the address bar at the top of your screen.
Once you’re in night mode, you’ll notice that all of the backgrounds have changed to dark grey or black, while text remains readable. You may also notice that replies have a slightly different design. (It’s like they came out of a comic book!)
When you are browsing in night mode, you can come back to it at any time by selecting it from the same drop down menu – or just click the button again on your bookmark bar.

We also found a subreddit called /r/NightMode that is dedicated to the use of night mode on various websites and applications (https://www.reddit.com/r/NightMode/). It has a lot of useful information, and I’ve included a couple links to images showing what the various modes look like.
Offer a few reasons why someone might want to use night mode
I for one have always had a problem in the evenings when trying to use Reddit or browse on my laptop. I have found that once the sun has set my eyes struggle to pick out text from the background and instead of relaxing and getting on with other things, I end up squinting at the screen in the hope of being able to see what’s going on. Looking at the screen in the dark can also be quite depressing and it feels much safer to have a dark background making it easier to see what’s going on. Night Mode makes reading Reddit much more pleasant by providing a darker background and lighter colored text, which means you can relax and do what you need to do without having to squint too hard.
As an added bonus I have found that the darker background makes it much easier to read because the contrast is much higher. If you feel the same way then Night Mode is definitely worth trying out.
Lets face it some of us at times can be quite visual and are more used to seeing things in a certain way and if this is you then here’s some reasons why you might want to use night mode.
• Night Mode is great for relaxing on the sofa and reading in the dark or from a distance.
• Night Mode feels safer to use in the dark, especially if you’re not sure what’s going on around you.
• Night Mode is great for websites that can be quite bright and hurt your eyes at night.
• Night Mode makes it easier to read and relax with less squinting in dimmed lighting conditions.
• Night Mode is great if you like using night mode on your phone.
• Night Mode makes it easier to read small print.

No need to worry though – just click the refresh button in your browser (usually located at the top) and then select Night Mode from the list of options. It’s also possible to quickly enable night mode by clicking the little lightning icon in the address bar at the top of your screen.
The lightning icon will appear on any Reddit page you visit. Clicking it will allow you to either enable or disable Night Mode for that page, as well as for all pages on the website. It is also possible to use this button with the Shift key held down in order to temporarily disable Night Mode. If you would prefer to not have Night Mode enabled by default, you can alternatively use this icon to disable night mode temporarily.
Once you have enabled Night Mode, you can view the current time in any post by clicking on the clock icon at the top of your screen.
