Introduction: What is WiFi Direct and Why Would I Need to Turn It Off?
There are many different ways to turn off wifi direct, as this is a newer technology. However, the easiest way is to just hit the power button on your router. Many routers have a physical power button that you can quickly press and then hold for 3 seconds to enter into a “password” mode. In order to use wifi direct, both your laptop and the device you are connecting with must be able to connect directly with each other (no central hub). As long as your device is running the latest version of android, you can connect to it with just a standard cable and avoid wifi direct entirely. When using wifi direct, your laptop and device will both need to be connected directly to the same router, so it goes without saying that the two computers (and devices) will need to be fairly close together. If you’re using wifi direct with a Windows PC or laptop, most routers have a physical switch on them that you can use to turn off wifi direct. The simplest way to turn off wifi direct is to turn off your wifi before going to bed or turning in for the night. If you have any questions or concerns about wifi direct, feel free to leave a comment.

Settings for WiFi Direct Connection on Windows 10
Settings -> Network & Internet -> WiFi Direct Connectivity I personally have set my router to automatically connect to wifi direct when available (reasons for this will be coming up soon). This can also be done through the router settings. In order for your device to use wifi direct, it’s a good idea to have your device in sleep mode so that it doesn’t build a history of services you open. For example, I will often use Caffeine on my laptop. It helps me keep my laptop open while I work, but anytime Caffeine says “I’m keeping your computer awake” it’s building a history of websites I’ve visited. If I want to use wifi direct, it’s important that my laptop isn’t “remembered” by the network itself. (These are just my own personal practices, YMMV.) DON’T
Conclusion: Turning off WiFi Direct is a Simple Way to Improve Your Internet Connectivity!
The other main way of turning off WiFi direct is to use the power button on your router, but this means that you need to be physically close to the router. This is a good thing, because you want to make sure that your device is not in the middle of a network history. Even though you are physically connected to the router, it’s not a good idea to be connected to the internet.
Here is a guide on how to disable WiFi Direct:
The alternative is to use the router’s web interface and then change the wireless connection type in the Wireless tab. By default, you will want to uncheck all boxes under “Internet access”. Click Save and reboot.
(Edit: I think that this may not be the case in subsequent releases of Windows 10)
(Edit 2: Thanks to @mbaum on twitter who confirmed that this is still necessary in later versions of Windows.)
(Edit 3: OK, apparently it’s not necessary in the latest release of Windows 10. But I figured it couldn’t hurt. Subscribe to my blog/twitter if you want to make sure I don’t miss anything. 🙂
If you do this, follow the steps below to reconnect to a network.
