Types of mattresses
A mattress usually consists of one or more layers of padding, which provide comfort and support to the sleeper. The top layer is usually a cover, typically made of woven fabric that may contain cotton or another natural fiber. The next layer down is usually a quilted pad (insulator) and then an innerspring unit. Below that is a foam core, typically two inches thick. The type of material used to create each layer varies. With the exception of the foam core, the layers are usually glued together, with non-absorbent materials (such as cotton or wool) used for this purpose as well as for padding.
Materials used in mattresses include:
Cotton: It is stuffed in mattresses and other textiles to absorb humidity and make them more comfortable. Due to its superior absorbency, cotton is used in baby diapers.
Cotton is also used in upholstery.
Molecular formula: CHNO

How to shop for a mattress
Before shopping for a mattress, first be sure to check your bed frame. Many older beds can’t support heavier mattresses, so you may want to invest in a newer bed before buying one. You want to make sure that the mattress will fit your bed frame. You also want to make sure you can move the mattress in and out of your bedroom easily.
When shopping, look for mattresses with:
1. Firmness. A mattress that’s too soft or too firm can cause back and neck pain. The best time to buy a new mattress is when your old one is no longer comfortable. Try it out for a week or two to make sure that the firmness doesn’t become uncomfortable, and then you can decide whether the mattress is right for you. If it’s not, return it and try another one.
2. Support. The best King-sized mattress should provide a firm base for the rest of the bed frame, but give enough support so that your partner isn’t having her head chopped off. You want to make sure that your mattress won’t sag or slump over time. Also, if you sleep with a partner, ask if they like their head touching the other side of the mattress. If not, it’s too firm and could cause a sore neck.
3. Comfort and Motion Transfer. Some mattresses with latex or memory foam can cause motion transfer, causing one partner to feel the movements of the other. If you’re sleeping somewhere where you can’t adjust the height of your bed, it’s important that both people feel comfortable. If there’s a lot of bouncing and rolling, this could cause pain in either partner. Try looking for a mattress that’s made with latex or memory foam, but without springs. This will provide cushioning and softness without those annoying motions.

What to look for in a mattress
When shopping for a mattress, the most important thing to consider is how it will support your body. There are five main areas that you should focus on: 1) the top layer (cover), 2) the bottom layer, 3) quilted innerspring unit, 4) foam layers and 5) polyfoam layers. When examining a mattress’s top and bottom layers [see picture], be sure to check out the comfort level . Comfort is a very subjective issue, but there are some easy ways to gauge how well a mattress will be for you. Comfort depends on how firm a mattress is, how much air it contains, and the amount of motion transfer it allows. While there are many types of foam, each has its own unique quality that affects one’s sleep comfort level, so check out this post to learn the differences between gel, memory foam, latex and viscoleather foam.
The second thing to look at while shopping for a mattress is the comfort level of its innerspring unit. A good-quality innerspring unit will provide a smooth ride [i.e., no jarring], while a cheap unit will produce lots of movement. An average mattress [with a regular thickness on top] should support you with at least 450 pounds once it has been in use for a few months. If you are over 450 pounds and your current mattress is unable to support you, you may be looking for a more expensive mattress than the one that’s currently in your home.
The third factor you should consider is the comfort level of the polyfoams and polyester fillings. These layers are meant to add a softer feel while supporting the weight of your body. If you want a firmer mattress, look for one that contains higher amounts of polyfoam and polyester fillings [see picture].

How to choose the best mattress for you
Your mattress’s top and bottom layers will offer the most comfort and support. The way you sleep is very important to overall comfort, so pay attention not just to the mattress’s top layer, but to how its bottom layer lies directly on your body. The more pressure there is when you lie down, the more important it is that your mattress has a supportive bottom layer. When shopping for a mattress, be sure to check out whether the cover of your choice is removable or not . Some people prefer to buy a mattress without a cover so that they can customize the comfort level of their mattress to their own preferences. If you don’t want to buy a mattress with a cover, look at the type of material that the mattress is made up of as well as the thickness. If you choose to buy a mattress without a cover, you’ll also need something to protect it against stains and wear.
