How to change the name of your Nvidia display

The different ways to change the name of your Nvidia display
You can have a long or short name. You can change the order of nvidia cards as well. If you want to find out how many nvidia cards are in use, type: lspci | grep -e VGA -e 3D -e PCI | wc -l.
If you want to change the name, then the most important thing is to make sure your computer’s BIOS has been updated. You need to restart your computer and it will take a few minutes for the drivers to restart before any changes are saved in BIOS.
For laptops, with Windows 8, go to the charms bar > search for power. Click the power options and then on advanced > change the name of this pc. Then change your display name.
1) Nvidia Control Panel
This is where you can change many things. Go to the Nvidia Control Panel under the 3D Settings. This is a great powerful tool. The “Change your display name” button is at the bottom of the page.
You will see a list of all displays, select which one you want to change and then click on edit. Then you get this window as shown below:
Which method is best for you
You will have to decide for yourself which method is best for you. All of the methods are easy to follow. You can change your NVIDIA display name as many times as you want. You can also change it back to the default name.
There are three methods that work for all NVIDIA cards. If you have a new version of the NVIDIA drivers the version number will be listed below in this article.
1) Ask your Ubuntu System Administrator to change your display name in the GUI Menu. You can find instructions on how to do this here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuDisplays#How_To_Change_a_Display_Name
2) Use the command line method.
3) Use a program called nvidia-settings which will make it easy for you to change your display name. The following instructions are for the second method. If you want to use the software, first be sure that you have a NVIDIA driver newer than 346.18 or 352.30 from here: https://github.com/NVIDIA/nvidia-settings
If you are using a driver version older than 346.18 or 352.30, you will have to use the command line method. You can also use the nvidia-settings program if you have a newer driver and it is working correctly.
Method 2) Change your NVIDIA Display Name in Ubuntu with nvidia-settings program:

You need to sudo the command. The best way to do this is to run the command in terminal. You can type this command from the terminal. Open a terminal. Type cd /usr/bin and press Enter. Type sudo nvidia-settings and press Enter. Choose your NVIDIA display from the menu and click on File|Save to X Configuration File. You could also Command Click on the NVIDIA display name. Click on Yes to save or rename when it asks you to save or rename your X configuration file. You do want to do this, so that you can see what’s running on your NVIDIA display.
After you save your changes, you need to log out of OS X and log back in. Now you can see what’s running on your NVIDIA display.

You need to start a terminal window. Type gksu nvidia-settings and press Enter. Select your NVIDIA display from the menu and click on File|Save to X Configuration File. You could also Command Click on the NVIDIA display name. Click on Yes to save or rename when it asks you to save or rename your X configuration file. It is important that you do this, in case there is a power failure, a reboot, or if you need to change it back. You can open the configuration file in a text editor to make any changes.

“So I just bought a new PC, and installed Windows 7. Now, my PC has dual monitors, which I need to keep the same names on both screens (such as left and right). However, there’s no way to do that!
Now, I don’t really care about the name of the display itself (it’s irrelevant what it says). What I want is for it to have the same name on both. I know the standard way of doing this is to put “/dev/nvidia0” in the name field. However, I’m not sure if this is for all NVIDIA graphics cards, or only for their own graphics card (since I do have a GTX 560 Ti).
