The processing facility was leased out and renamed in 1993 as a separate business called Artex Beef Inc.Animal Management Systems was incorporated in 1987 and started as a stockyard, slaughterhouse and brokerage facility.
Ron Arthur retired in 1998 and sold his interest of 1.5 million shares to Rosemary. The company changed its name to Animal Management Systems Inc, or AMS for short, and built a new processing facility near the existing one to allow for better efficiency. In 1999, animal management systems came on the public market, becoming the first privately owned beef processing facility in Canada . The company’s shares were sold at $2.25 each.
The morning of October 8, 2000, Rosemary Arthur and her partner were shot and killed in the family’s home by a close friend. She had been scheduled to testify the day after in a wrongful death lawsuit brought by her son against her late husband.

After being inspected in 1980, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) discovered that the semen being produced and sold by the company contained a disease that caused infertility. The CFIA action was followed up with a warning from Health Canada after the company was discovered to be importing semen from an American producer who had two cases of brucellosis. In 1986, the company was linked to E. coli O157:H7 when an outbreak occurred at a California restaurant in which one woman died, and another 35 people were ill. The illnesses were caused by the consumption of the company’s steaks. In 1988, the company was involved in a court case when two employees made allegations of sexual harassment against the owner, Bill Coleman. After an investigation by CBC’s “the fifth estate”, it was discovered that during the ’80s and early ’90s, while Coleman was working as a meat inspector at the Calgary plant he owned, he had allowed ranchers to mix their cow carcasses with pigs who had been raised in outdoor pens. He was also found to have employed violent and abusive behavior on the factory’s farm animals as well as engaging in illegal steroid use. Despite his actions, animal management systems retained their licence to operate and kept making its products available to consumers. In 1994, the CFIA discovered that cow carcasses were being held at below freezing temperatures.
