Definition of text input
Text input is a screen input method for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. It is an alternative to manually typing on a touch screen device. It is mainly one of the methods on how to input text into the iPhone. If a user wants to send an email or compose a message, they will use text input. Text input also allows users to type in punctuation and spaces that are present on the device keyboard but not available with voice recognition.
Text input loads as soon as the device is opened. When users touch the screen, they are able to type letters, numbers and em in a similar fashion to a physical keyboard. When users tap on the screen once, they will be able to select each letter. As long as you do not spam the device with excessive taps of the screen within a short period of time, you will be able to type quickly with text input.
It is important to note that text input does not replace the traditional “ABC” method of typing on a touch screen device. To type with text input is similar to typing on a physical keyboard, but with many additional benefits. The true benefit of text input is that it allows users to type something quickly without having to wait for the keyboard to load or have their fingers attempt repeatedly on the hardware keyboard until they get an “A” they are trying to type. The user also has the option of using voice input by speaking into the iPhone microphone or using the built-in dictation feature. When the user chooses this, the screen will become black. The user can then speak their text and the text will appear onscreen as they speak. There is a microphone icon in the top right corner at all times except when using voice search, pressing it will cause a red circle to appear where it is placed. When finished with dictation, a user must tap anywhere outside of this red circle to finish typing.
