What to do if avast doesn’t detect a virus on your computer
The scan will complete automatically after your computer is plugged in. It’s best to use the “scheduled scan” option if you know when your computer will be left idle, so that it can get scanned regularly. The scheduled scan is set to automatically detect malware, but it may not detect some rare malware on your first run, so you’ll still have to check the scan results.
If avast! antivirus detects a virus, you’ll get a message like the one below that explains how to get further information about the infection. If you have any questions or comments, please write to us at [email protected]

AVAST Antivirus reports: The System is clean. No infections detected.
The scan has been completed before, but avast! didn’t detect any infection.

and this is the “scheduled scan” result
Please note: Scheduled scans are not updated automatically, so you’ll have to run the full scheduled scan manually. You can do it by clicking on “Change settings” in the “Tools” menu and then on the “Scan Now” button. The scan will show up as a full scan on your Windows taskbar (in addition to the scheduled scan).

How to determine if your computer has a virus
Go to Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System. From here, you can see whether there are any processes that are currently running or appearing in the Task Manager. If any processes are listed in the process list, quarantining them will prevent whatever is behind them from spreading further. You need to check your system for malware with a reliable anti-virus program.
The following is a list of the most common symptoms that may show if you have a virus:
* Your computer runs slower than normal and has trouble accessing the Internet.
* Your important files get damaged or seem to be missing. (Windows says that there are problems with your file and asks if you want to replace it.) [ARTICLE END]

(This is an article on how to determine if your computer has a virus, which is basically that your computer has been infected and it’s not detected by avast.)
Why avast might not be detecting a virus on your computer
There are a few reasons why this could be. First, you may have recently updated your antivirus program (as recommended by Avast) to the latest version. Some malware can disable security programs so that it can run and infect your computer further. You can change this setting directly in the program.
It’s also possible that you have a virus that is not detected by your antivirus program. However, Avast will still protect your computer from viruses not detected by the program.

How to fix the problem if avast isn’t detecting a virus on your computer
If you suspect your computer has a virus but Avast isn’t detecting it, follow these steps to manually update the virus definitions that Avast uses to protect you: Click on the Settings tab. Click Help, then check Use Full Scan Now to test your computer for malware at a later time when you know it will be completely idle. If updates are available, they will automatically be downloaded and installed. You may need to restart your computer or system to get this done.
If this does not help, please notify us of your issue on the [Avast Community Forum] or [Avast Support Blog] .
In order to save your time and resources, Avast offers a simple process of updating virus definitions automatically: In the Settings tab, click Help. Select Check for updates now under Auto-check updates. When you select this option, your computer will check for any new updates to virus definitions and install them automatically. (To remember to check for updates again at a later time, choose Save settings.) Note: If you want to be able to save your settings and check for virus definitions when the computer is idle, select the options in the Help menu to Do not automatically check for updates during idle hours on this computer or Do not automatically check for updates during idle hours on all my computers.
Avast will prompt you if an update is available and then install it. For more information, visit our [forum] or [support blog] .
