The future of gaming and esports
Magic: The Gathering is not only an event but an experience. To expand upon the idea of competition, there will be a lot of very fun games featuring the players, such as a team game called Magic-opoly. Its starting capital for each player ranges from $1,000 to $300,000 depending on their skill level and rewards are given out according to how well you play. Aside from gaming, there will be many other things happening at the event, such as an art show with some of the artists from Magic who will be exhibited in different locations around the venue; and a cosplay contest featuring MTG cosplayers from around the world. Of course, there will be other things happening at the event.
The first Magic: The Gathering World Championship tournament will be coming up in early 2018. The competition will be held in the biggest venue on the Las Vegas strip, the MGM Grand Garden Arena. There will be a total of 24 competitors competing for their share of $1 million dollars. They are the best players from around the world and each player is equipped with an arsenal of skills and powerful cards (as well as numerous sideboard cards), ready to fight for that coveted title. This will be a weekend-long competition that will span over three days of battles starting with a Standard format and then switching to the new limited (Booster Draft) format on the final day.

How GP LA has helped shape the industry
It’s a huge event, with great prize pools and massive attendance. Every game has one big event that stands out above the rest, and in Magic it’s usually the Players’ Championship. However, the threshold to get into it is very high. For this GP LA 2018, ChannelFireball is hosting a tournament called “My First Grand Prix” which will grant players into the next Players’ Championship event in 2019 if they do well. This event is shaping up to be the biggest Magic tournament of the year. Bigger than the Pro Tour and bigger than the Players’ Championship. I wanted to find out how important this event was for the game going forward, so I interviewed some of the decision makers at GP LA 2018.
“One thing we haven’t done, and I’m not sure any Grand Prix has done this before, is you have a “My First Grand Prix”, [which is] the equivalent of a pro tour. So it’s a pro tour equivalent that anyone can play in.”

Some of the biggest names in gaming at this year’s event
GP LA is a hotbed for the best players in the world. There is a prize pool of $300,000, which attracts the best from around the globe to compete. There will be many top names who will participate this year. Some of them are: Owen Turtenwald (current World Champion), Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa, Lukas Blohon, Eric Froehlich, Ben Stark, and many more. There will be a couple of tournaments that will have $15,000 prizes: Monday Night Magic and Dragons’ Lair.
The Monday Night Magic will be a Standard tournament with a $15,000 prize pool. It is an open event that starts at 6:30 pm. The Dragons Lair will be a Modern Constructed tournament and there is also a prize pool of $15,000. There are no qualifications needed to play in the Monday Night Magic and you can register as a spectator to watch the game live in this event. There is a $25 entry fee for Dragon’s Lair; both tournaments offer various formats.
The GP LA will start on December 1 and continue until December 3, 2017. It is held in the Anaheim Convention Center in California. The entrance fee of $100 to register is valid for all three days.
