FIFA has recently opened an investigation into the transfer of Burkina Faso player, Bertrand Traoré, to Chelsea. The investigation into Chelsea came after the club signed Traoré on 1 January 2014, the first day of the transfer window after his 18th birthday. However, photos emerged online of the striker actually playing for the club in a non-competitive match in 2011, when he was just 16. In this article David Winnie, Solicitor at Charles Douglas Solicitors LLP, sheds light on the factual background to the matter, considers FIFA and Chelsea’s respective positions, and examines the relevant FIFA regulations on the transfer of minors.
