Malta moves closer to embracing blockchain and virtual currencies in i-gaming

On 29 March 2018, the Malta Gaming Authority (the ‘MGA’ or the ‘Regulator’) published its public consultation document entitled, ‘Guidance on the use of Distributed Ledger Technology and the acceptance of Virtual Currencies through the implementation of a Sandbox Environment’ (the ‘Paper’). In this article, Dr Emma Grech, Legal Consultant at eLudum, examines the guidelines posited by the MGA in its Paper, a round-up of principles, which, in Dr Grech’s view, demonstrate from the outset that the Regulator is prudently mindful of both the advantages and risks posed by the developing DLT space - particularly, of course, when set against a remote gambling backdrop.
