International: The modernisation of Convention 108 and its international potential

The Council of Europe (‘CoE’) adopted, on 18 May 2018, the Protocol (CETS No. 223) amending the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with Regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data (‘Convention 108’) (‘the Protocol’). The Protocol, which is a result of a 7-year process, seeks to modernise Convention 108 in light of new information and communication technologies and to strengthen its effective implementation. Peter Kimpian, Program Advisor of the Data Protection Unit of the CoE takes us behind the process of the modernisation and discusses the international potential of the novelties introduced in the new text.
