Canada: Committee Report recommends overhaul of federal privacy legislation

On 28 February 2018 the House of Commons Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics (‘the Committee’) issued its report Towards Privacy by Design: Review of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (‘the Report’), which outlines a number of recommendations that would result in a significant overhaul of Canada’s privacy regime. Karl Schober, Associate at Dentons, explains what the Report means in terms of meaningful consent, the right to be forgotten, enforcement powers, and alignment with the European General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) (‘GDPR’).
