International: Cyber risk and anti-doping: protecting athlete data

In April 2017, the International Association of Atheltics Federations (‘IAAF’) became the latest sporting body to be the subject of a suspected cyber attack, which affected the medical information of its athletes1. The Russian hacking group known as ‘Fancy Bear,’ said to be behind the attacks, subsequently released the medical information of athletes such as Bradley Wiggins, Serena Williams and dozens of other high-profile stars. This incident not only highlights the impact such breaches can have on affected individuals, bust also the severe implications for the organisations in question. Gary Rice, Hans Allnutt and Aidan Healy, Partners and Senior Associate respectively at DAC Beachcroft, consider the legal and practical issues that can arise in responding to cyber attacks and breaches, before considering the likely impact of the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) (‘GDPR’) on cyber risk.
